Running fake??

Prior to the birth of my second child in October 2013 I would generally just run a 5k Race For Life once a year but after having Flo and deciding I needed to shift my baby (and pre-baby!) fat I decided running would be the answer. Cheap, easy to fit in and the ability to do it at the drop of a hat.

2 1/2 years later and I still manage at least one run a week of between 5 and 10k so I’m pretty chuffed. I’ve managed to loose a lot of weight and I feel good about my body and health.

So why do I still feel like a fraud??

You know what I mean, I don’t class myself as a ‘runner’. Why do we, as mums/women always put ourselves down? Anyhoo that is a point for a completely different post that will come soon enough.

Luckily I was contacted by the lovely Trespass who could see through my insecurities and see me for the runner that I am and I need to thank them for that, because by having a ‘real’ brand get in touch and have belief in me I have actually realised i have belief in myself! Is that hollow? I don’t think so. It’s purely support. Support for me, mums and all of us who are trying to better ourselves and get back to who we were before children (YOU KNOW THE ONES THAT WE LOVE DEARLY – OBVIOUSLY!!) but who take up all our time!

To the point in hand! I had been thinking for ages that I needed a running jacket, I would often go out with a fleece cardigan or a hoodie on, only to get too hot 10 minutes in to my run but because of my earlier discussed insecurities of not being a ‘runner’ I couldn’t warrant the need for a ‘running’ jacket.

WELL!!!! Can I just say! If you run 1k or if you run 20k you NEED a running jacket! The weather is up and down as we know and the thing I didn’t know about these said ‘running jackets’ is that they love and protect you whatever the weather! If it’s cold they will keep you warm, if it’s warm but a bit nippy they take the edge off and even though you get hot and sweaty whilst you run you won’t feel it with one of these bad boys on!

Runs Done & I Smashed It – Thank You!

So I completed my final run of my three runs in three weekends challenge to raise money for Cancer Research this weekend!

I’m so delighted that I’ve done them all!

No. 1 was Race For Life in Victoria Park, London. I’ve written about that in Race for life – Race 1!

No. 2 was Run or Dye run in Penshurst Place :

As you can see it was messy, apart from the promised powder paint that you are sprayed with at each kilometre it was torrential rain, I think this may of detracted from the enjoyment somewhat when paint was running in my eyes and I was sliding up and down hills on a country estate! There are lots of families and children at this one so its a real good laugh but there is no point in timing yourself and quite often no chance to actually run due to the amount of people. Overall it’s worth it if you want more of a fun run.

No. 3 was Race for Life in Lloyds Park, Croydon, my final 10K.

This one was probably my favorite! The weather was perfect for a run and was overcast when we set off, even spotting with rain half way through was a lovely refresher. Lloyds Park has a couple of nasty hills on their course which was a bit off putting as you had just got in to your stride and you were faced with a climb which unfortunately led to walking for me 😦 I did this run with my fav auntie and pre-school mums and it was lovely all meeting at the finish line. I didn’t break my hour time I had set myself and finsihed in 1 hr 14 mins but I was quite pleased as I had to stop for a ‘paula radcliffe’ wee in the bushes on the way round! lol

The MC at the event was really good and got everyone gee’d up at the beginning, he was congratulating everyone over the finish line which was nice to hear as us 10Kers set off for our second lap as the 5K runners were finishing. This race for life beat the my first run hands down, the 5K and 10K runners set off about the same time so the venue was packed and the buzz was amazing.  I totally recommend Race For Life 5 and 10K’s, they are really good to get you into running and raise money for a deserving cause.

Race For Life – Race 1!

So I completed my first out of three runs on Sunday with Race For Life at London’s, Victoria Park. You can read more about the three different runs on my Running the Triple post.IMG_2681
It was boiling and I must admit, I was excited but nervous! I haven’t pushed my toe further than 5K since I broke it….

Well I could tell…., the first 2 K were one of the most difficult I have ever run! It was totally all in the mind as I struggled to get ‘in the zone’!
I had to do some walking around 3K which is really unusual for me but gee’d up my a member of my running crew I managed to start running again. By 5K you come back round to the start and a huge cheer and wave from my gorgeous family and the rest of the supporters spurred me on and I managed to run through the next 5K without stopping.
I finished in 1 hr 11 mins which was longer than I hoped for but according to mapmyrun i did 10.48 K and my ave pace was 6.5 m/km which I’m dead happy with.

Race for life events are brilliant and I love being a part of something so emotional and close to my heart however the 10K races do tend to be a bit quieter than the 5K’s that usually start 2 hours after so it could do with a bit more supporters and noise around the course to keep your motivation up. Saying that I ran with my good friend Regan and her family and that was super lovely.

This weekend I’m really looking forward to my Run or Dye event in Kent so keep your eyes peeled 🙂

What you waiting for? I’m running the Triple with run or dye!

I know I’m getting a little run obsessed but I now have 3 runs that I’m hoping to do in 3 weeks. If there is anytime a good kick up the backside was needed this should do it 🙂

This week went well and I managed to get my average pace down to 6.23 min/km, my lowest ever believe it or not! It was hard and I really had to power through but I was determined to give you all some good news!

So back to my triple, I’m running a 10K in London’s Victoria Park on 27th June, a 5K in Kent on 5th July and a further 10K on 12th July in Croydon’s Lloyd Park. I’m raising money for Cancer Research as it has touched my friends and relatives too much.

My aim is to beat my 1 hour times for the 10K  but the one I’m looking forward to the most is the fun 5K in Kent. Its a Run or Dye event. What this entails is a fun 5K that you can walk/run or even crawl and whilst going round you get ‘painted’  with safe, plant based powdered dye! What a laugh!

The running returns…

As many of you know I became a keen runner after having my second child Flo at the end of 2013 and managed my first ever 10k just a year ago; the Nike night run and ran a second one, Race for life in the summer.

Disaster struck in September 2014 when upon visiting my Auntie and consuming a couple of vino’s I fell down a large step and landed badly on my foot. It turned out I had fractured my big toe and ended up wearing a boot for 8 weeks which some of you may remember from Blogfest!

After an arduous process of doing no exercise apart from abs & squats in January and numerous Physio appointments my toe health has become much better and although I still have pain and may have to start cortisone injections I have started exercising and running again.

The problem with being a parent is finding the time to exercise and lets be honest by the time the other half gets home at 7.30 pm Ive already been in for two hours, played with the kids, got through the bedtime routine, cooked the dinner and tidied up, there is no way I want to go out again to exercise!

So what to do? Well I joined fit4less gym which is opposite my work and have started a workout designed for me by the helpful trainer there in my lunch hour.

My first run was 3 k to the gym where i did my workout and then 3k back home. I couldn’t walk for about 4 days without looking like John Wayne!

Second run was a straight 4k, I was pleased but disappointed my average km/minute was so high seen as I used to run at 6 km/minute.

Sunday I ran my best yet, 5k, no stopping and got my average back down to 6.30 km/minute. 🙂

So whats next? I want to improve my pace and have a 10k booked for June and another in July. I’m continuing with my healthy eating (or trying to!) so you can read more about it here : slow & steady.  I’ll keep you posted!

Is the new fad diet working?

So I’ve done 5:2 diet since the beginning of the year and although I swore to you that I would update you on my progress I must admit to my demotivation.

You’ll be pleased to hear I finished my 30 day ab and squat challenge in January. I started the plank challenge in February and managed to get through till about the 20th before it fell by the wayside. This was around the time that I really started to fall off the weight loss wagon!! I have been maintaining by 5:2 but if I’m honest with myself I have been eating atrociously on the non fast days! Consequently I’ve been stuck at my weight since last public weigh-in post and felt ashamed to tell you all!

On a more positive note I have completed the majority of my Physio on my broken toe so am hoping to start running again this week….

This week I have decided to do the ‘chemical diet’ also known as the ‘egg diet’. It’s super strict and you can only eat whats on the list and at certain times but it is only for 1 week and I really wanted to give my body a little push before jumping back on the 5 : 2 wagon!

i have taken this from lots of sites around the web although I think predominantly it came from a Netmums forum : The basis of this diet is chemical. If you follow the diet to the letter for one week you should lose 14 pounds (and possibly up to 20 pounds)

Day 1 Breakfast 1 slice dry toast and grilled tomatoes
Lunch Fresh fruit (any amount)
Dinner 2 hard boiled eggs, salad, grapefruit

Day 2 Breakfast Grapefruit, 1 boiled egg
Lunch Roast chicken (any amount) & tomatoes
Dinner Grilled steak and salad

Day 3 Breakfast Grapefruit, 1 boiled egg
Lunch 2 boiled eggs and tomatoes
Dinner 2 Grilled lamb chops, celery & cucumber

Day 4 Breakfast 2 slices dry toast, 2 poached eggs
Lunch fresh fruit (any amount)
Dinner 2 hard boiled eggs, salad, grapefruit

Day 5 Breakfast 1 slice dry toast, 2 poached eggs
Lunch 2 poached eggs & tomatoes
Dinner Fresh or tinned fish and salad

Day 6 Breakfast 1 boiled egg, 1 glass grapefruit juice
Lunch Fresh fruit (any amount)
Dinner Roast chicken, cabbage, carrots

Day 7 Breakfast 2 scrambled eggs, grilled tomatoes
Lunch 2 Poached eggs& spinach
Dinner Grilled steak & salad

NOTE

Abstain from anything not mentioned.
Eat only what is shown or do without.
No substitutions allowed.
No eating between meals
No alcohol
No butter milk or fat

No salt

Drinks = black tea, black coffee, lemon tea, grapefruit juice, tonic, soda or water only
Salad = lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes and celery only

DO NOT DIET FOR MORE THAN ONE WEEK AT A TIME.

Weight Loss Wednesday with 5 : 2

So I have been a little demotivated this week 😦

I’ll start at the beginning!

Last Monday I was on a high, I lost 4 1/4 lbs on my first week of the 5:2 diet and marched in to my Monday fast day triumphantly. I did the same on Wednesday only having miso soup (20 cals) at lunchtime and a diet coke in the afternoon.

An excellent tip I picked up was to have a large bottle of fizzy water with me (I do my days when I’m at work) and whenever I felt hungry I had a glass and it really worked a treat.

I also discovered M&S balanced for you range and had a Lamb Moussaka for only 280 calories with some steamed vegetables on Monday and a piece of Salmon and steamed veg on Wednesday.

I weighed in on Monday morning as usual full of expectation and found……

I’d lost NOTHING!!!!

So where do we go from here??

I must admit I went off to work this Monday with my head down and ready to scoff a cream cake! During the morning I found out that it was typically the most depressing day of the year nicknamed ‘Blue Monday’. Now whether this is another marketing trick to encourage holiday booking or whether this is generally true it actually cheered me up to know I wasn’t the only one feeling crap.

So lunchtime came and I’m pleased to say my willpower won out and I stuck to my miso soup and diet coke. For dinner was Salmon and roasted vegetables. Today I have managed to do the same and tucked into another M&S Lamb Moussaka whilst the other half had a chicken, mushroom pie at only 316 calories with steamed vegetables.

For an evening treat on fast days I like a Options hot chocolate at only 40 calories, it seems to curb the craving for something sweet.

I looked back over my week last week once I had calmed down and if I’m really honest with myself I drank too much wine and had a few too many treats on non fast days so my resolution for this week is to be good, ok better, on my non fast days from tomorrow.

On another plus I have maintained my abs and squat challenge as per last week and am now on day 21. There must be abs under there by now?!
